After our office successfully designed the 20er JK for the Bergner shipyard and the modern interpretation of a dinghy cruiser, the ‘Lago 26’ for Hans Spitzauer and both rather high-priced boat types with already more than 10 units sold well, the long-time 16er sailor Rainer Herget approached us with the order to design a new 16er dinghy cruiser.
The 16s have the advantage of having a regatta crew of only two people and still having enough space below deck, as well as being suitable for touring and travelling due to their class regulations.
They are also designed as articulated chasers, which makes them interesting again, especially in today’s world. By skilfully observing the class specifications, it is possible to create not only fast but also pleasing shapes.
Mr Herget, who previously milled moulds and models and produced rudders and centreboards in his company, will build a negative mould over a milled block for the new 16 and produce the boat in solid fibreglass laminate.
This will enable the dinghy cruiser, which is manufactured entirely in Germany, to be offered competitively.
It’s been a few years since a new 16 was constructed, and in this design special emphasis was placed on easy planing, among other things.
The main dimensions:
Overall length = 7.0m
Width overall = 2.54m
Internal height (IK AH to UK cabin) = 1.15m
Measured sail area = 16 square metres
The total weight of the boat consisting of hull, centreboard, mast and main boom with standing and running rigging, spinnaker pole, sheets, sails, steering gear and equipment approx. 570 kg
